BrothersoftEditor: Cerebware's German language trainer contains many features unavailable in more expensive language software. It tracks student progress, storing a record of each word tested, and returns to items causing difficulty. It provides hints in response to incorrect answers, including real-time colour formatting of the answer for very tricky items - type the wrong letter and the answer goes red. To assist memorisation of gender for nouns, items are presented in colour according to their gender. It reverts to Multiple Choice when an item is particularly difficult or a student is struggling. Based on the principle that learning is most efficient at a 90% success rate, it mixes easy and difficult items in a continuously monitored learning session, and it automatically schedules items for revision, so that items gradually ASCEND from 'unknown' to 'known' to 'mastered'. Users can set learning targets, with number of words to be learned per week, and the trainer will monitor learning progress.

The content is fully adaptable: users or teachers can add their own lists, or link the vocabulary to sentences from a German novel or audiobook. Licensed users will receive new vocabulary lists and grammar lessons as they become available but all users can write their own grammar lessons and tests, edit individual items, or exchange vocabulary lists with other users. Any text file containing German can be entered into the program and new words will be extracted automatically. Pictures (jpg or gif files) can be added to any item, and Cerebware is currently preparing a free image package for the top 1000 items.

The user interface is simple and intuitive, and has been used with great success by children as young as 8.

The shareware version is almost fully functional. It does not present vocabulary items beyond number 200, but these limits are lifted on purchase of a licence. The licence allows full access to all upgrades. you can free download Vocab Trainer (German) 14.0 now.
