The extension uses Firefox to invoke a Batch file (in order to save the output for display within the extension) which in Turns invokes an executable of the also open source ffmpeg2theora project.
I cannot vouch for the security of this approach, but it has been working fine for me in Windows Vista.
If someone can make a batch script for Linux which is equivalent to the batch file I am presently using for Windows, I am open to including it.
The name "Patent? Nonsense!" is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the public furor about whether Ogg Theora was/is free of submarine patents. It is not to advocate any particular point of view on the Topic (nor offer legal advice!)... you can free download Patent? Nonsense 0.2 now.
