HD Workbench does NOT run in the background unlike many other SMART monitoring tools. Nor does HD Workbench calculate a T.E.C. date!
When using HD Workbench for a first time a full test (read-only) is recommended. If there's evidence for 'bad sectors' run the full read/write test.
A TEC (Threshold Exceeds Condition) date tries to predict when a SMART failure will occur or when a specific Threshold will be reached. Since SMART itself is already predictive (it predicts a failure rather than telling there IS a problem), a TEC feature 'tries to predict' a Prediction! In our opinion TEC prediction is only cause for a lot of false alarms and nervous breakdowns.
HD-Workbench has been released as FREEWARE..
