BS Editor: Gothic is an action role-playing game, set in third-person perspective. The game is set within the Colony, the large area of land within the barrier. You're free to explore most of the Colony from the beginning, but that is not recommended, as initially you're very weak and most wildlife can kill you with one attack.

Therefore, you should train to increase your attributes - Strength, Dexterity and Mana. As you kill creatures and complete quests, you'll receive experience; with enough experience, you'll gain a level, which not only will increase the number of your hit points (and thus lengthen your lifespan) but also give you "skill points". If you meet someone who is eager to teach you, you can spend skill points to increase attributes or learn completely new skills.

Skills include: the increasing ability to fight with various types of weapons; the ability to pick pockets and locks; and the ability to jump further and sneak. You can also learn to Harvest furs, claws and other things from the animals you kill, and then sell them for money. Also note that collecting plants and getting meat from killed creatures can be very useful, since eating food heals you (or restores mana lost when casting spells).
